Meet our New Staff!

Jackie Halsey

MentorU Program Coordinator

What made you want to work for BBBS? When I came across the job description for the MentorU Program Coordinator, I knew it was the perfect position for me.  Having a background in formal education and working in the public school system for the past 10 years, I know how important it is for students to have a trusted adult, whether be a teacher, coach, or mentor.  Being able to help make that connection happen and facilitate a relationship between a match will be an unbelievable feeling.

What has been the best part of BBBS thus far? The best part of BBBS thus far has been the workplace culture. Everyone who works for the agency is passionate about their work and truly believes in making a difference in a child's life.  The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about their position in the organization and has made learning my new role enjoyable!

How do you like to spend your free time? I enjoy traveling and spending time with family and friends. I have a 3-year-old niece with whom I love making memories. I also love a good weekend getaway to catch a Packers game, listen to live music or explore a new city.

Keegan Korf

Chief Development Officer

What made you want to work for BBBS?  My personal experience with mentorship has been powerful. I’ve had the honor of being a mentor to two incredible young women through a different organization. Professionally, I was ready for a new challenge in my career, and it was a fateful conversation with CEO Nichole Turgeon, followed by a serendipitous meeting of Big Futures program coordinator Melissa Beagley, that quickly confirmed I would be connected to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands somehow.

What has been the best part of BBBS thus far?  As a former high school teacher, I know that with the right support system in place, young people truly have the power to change the world. Whether it’s from a family who cheers for that child every single day, through involvement with athletics or clubs in school, a solid group of positive friends, or one-to-one mentorship, young people thrive when they are consistently supported.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides part of this structure to help young people thrive through mentorship. The support and education provided to Bigs and the focus on our Littles’ parent/guardian involvement is what really sets our organization apart and I love the level of attention brought to each relationship and potential relationship from our Match Support team.

Personally, the strengths and unique experience that I bring to this work have been welcomed and embraced by the BBBS team and I feel like I’ve found a work home here. To be welcomed so warmly with open arms (literally…lots of hugs my first few weeks!) have helped me know that I’m in the exact right place.

How do you like to spend your free time? What is this “free time” you speak of? Ha! I’ve been married to Justin for 13 years, and we have a 2-and-a-half-year-old son named Ender. Being a toddler parent is a whole situation, so my evenings and weekends look a lot different than they used to but, MAN, are they more fun! We enjoy time with our family, our close friends, and our three cats – Fixer, Sonny and Spirit. We’re currently VERY into the entire Toy Story franchise.

It’s very important to me that I give back to the community and set an example for my son. I currently sit on two boards, Voices for Children and Nebraska Writers Collective, both of which also center youth in their own important ways.

Otherwise, you can find me out in my garden, riding my e-bike, reading books, or soaking in a great podcast - the most introverted-sounding hobbies for an extrovert I bet you’ve ever heard!

What made you want to work for BBBS?   The name recognition of this organization goes far beyond the Omaha region. I believe in the mission of BBBS and what we stand for.  I have always supported our youth and do what I can to help them succeed in life.  I have also learned that, as a former elementary teacher, I could provide part of what our youth need, but their needs sometimes go beyond the classroom.

What has been the best part of BBBS thus far?  In the short time I have been here, I have been very encouraged and truly amazed at the team support here.  From day #1, the staff here has been extremely welcoming, helpful, and very supportive.  As an organization that speaks volumes, and as a newcomer, it is great to be part of such a welcoming organization.

How do you like to spend your free time?  I enjoy watching my nephew play professional soccer.  He has had quite a career so far, and it’s been fun to follow him.  I also enjoy reading novels - - mystery, romance, and an occasional biography.  In addition, I have 3 private students who live in Japan.  We have our English lessons via Skype, and that is rewarding.
